BioSeal™ Agricultural Sealants

BioSeal™ Agricultural Sealants

BioSeal™ 2.0, BioSeal™ 3.0 and BioSeal™ 6.0 are closed cell, water blown spray polyurethane foam sealants that can be used in a variety of applications, from the farm to heavy industrial.

CERTIFICATIONS

BioSeal™ 2.0 has 3% bio-based content and 3% pre-consumer recycled content in the finished foam. BioSeal™ 3.0 has 16% bio-based content in the finished product. BioSeal™ 6.0 has 17% bio-based content in the finished product.

AGRICULTURAL APPLICATIONS

Most agricultural buildings do not perform like a residential or commercial structure. Instead they rely on inexpensive, or sometimes even natural, ventilation systems to force air through the building. Often times insulating an agricultural building is not as important as sealing it correctly. A building with leaks uses more energy and prevents proper air flow, thus making the entire building inefficient. In order to create a more efficient structure, installers seal the roof and sidewalls.

Low density spray foams have been used in agricultural structures, but usually will not last in areas that are exposed to moisture, animals and heavy equipment—basically everyday life on a farm. Instead, you need a denser, closed cell sealant that can endure daily wear and tear.

BioSeal™ 2.0, BioSeal™ 3.0 and BioSeal™ 6.0 are dense foam sealants with tough, thick skins that adhere to most materials. They create a smooth, monolithic surface inside the building and seal it in a way that will stand up to the challenges of farm life.

BENEFITS OF BIOSEAL SEALANTS
  • High density sealants (3.0 lb and 6.0 lb) make it difficult for darkling beetles to penetrate
  • Provides no food value for insects
  • Stands up to high-pressure spray washes
  • Formulated in black and white for your applications
  • Integrates soy-based bio-polyols, as a replacement for a portion of the petroleum ingredients without sacrificing performance
  • Supports farmers by using a renewable ingredient
  • Reduces petroleum use by integrating renewable ingredients and by increasing building efficiency
  • Spray applied using water instead of a chemical blowing agent

STUDIES SHOW POULTRY HOUSE RETROFITS SAVE MONEY

A study conducted in 2006 by Auburn University documents the costs and returns of retrofitting a poultry house with spray foam sealants. Six Alabama test houses had curtain sidewalls treated with a 1-inch sprayed high-density polyurethane foam sealant:

  • These houses realized a 35% savings in fuel costs in comparison to identical untreated houses
  • Annual fuel savings were 1,850 gallons per house after treatment
  • High-to-low temperature differences in the treated houses are only 3 – 4 degrees compared to untreated houses that experience 7 – 8 degree differences
  • Static pressure of the houses increased from 0.12 before treatment to an average of 0.27 after treatment
  • Further advantages of this retrofit application were seen in slight improvements in bird performance data over a 7 flock, one year period
  • The R-value of the sidewalls increased from approximately R-1 to R-8 at the curtains. Above and below the curtains the R-values increased from R-2 to R-9.
  • At prevailing propane prices ($1.39 per gallon) and grower pay rate ($0.05 per pound) the cost of retrofitting the structures was paid back within 10 – 12 flocks.
